Haiti Earthquake

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti at 2153 GMT on 12 January 2010 at a depth of 10 kilometres. The epicentre lay only about 10 miles (16 kilometers) southwest of Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. Two aftershocks registering 5.9 and 5.5 on the Richter scale followed within the hour, with more temblors later.

According to Haitian authorities, as many as 100,000 could have perished. Rescue efforts continue with the intervention of the international community. Supplies are arriving at the damaged airport in Port-au-Prince, however bottlenecks in the system are preventing aid from getting to where it is needed.

A desperate Haitian population have seen rioting and looting. The United States are sending in some 10,000 peacekeeping troops, and helicopters have been brought in to better distribute supplies. Thousands are in need of food, water and surgical intervention as the United Nations are setting up field hospitals.

The necessity of mass graves further plunges survivors into despair as bodies go unidentified and traditional burial rites are denied.
